How dangerous is it to use cadmium paints?

I was wondering how safe it was to use cadmium paint. I’ve heard of some of the health risks that using a lot of it constantly would cause, but I don’t plan on using it that often. I can’t imagine it being more dangerous than the pastels that I use (and have no clue what toxins are in), but being naive and having done a report on the effects of cadmium (in general; not neccessarily in paints), I can’t be too sure. I would greatly appreciate a response.

As long as you don’t eat it and wash it off your hands you have nothing to worry about.

It’s bad if you inhale it, (and can be absorbed my the skin).
    So
    Don’t snort it.
Don’t put it in anything that sprays it (airbrush)
Wash your hands thoroughly after using it (don’t finger paint with it)
For ultimate protection: goggles, carpenter mask, and gloves

wear gloves when you use cadmium paints, even skin exposure can cause harm to the levels in your blood stream.

If you want, look for paint colors that say cadmium hue, meaning there is no cadmium in the paint, only a replicated pigment.

Yes, what the other answerers say is true, from what I heard – also, I just wanted to add that I have found that a pretty close alternative (for oil paint, at least) is Grumbacher red – ok, perhaps a litter bluer I think, but I do like using it, myself…
