Is my landlord required to remove arsenic from my well water? What is the best option?

Posted by admin on June 3rd, 2010 and filed under arsenic | 2 Comments »

Our well water was tested and was found to have 38ppb of arsenic in it, the EPA limit is only 10ppb. We don’t drink the water, and we don’t let our kids take baths in it, but we do shower and do our laundry in it. How dangerous is it (when you’re not drinking it?) Also, is our landlord required to spend the money to fix it? I know there are filters available but they are expensive. Thanks for the advice – please let me know where you got your information from! Thanks!

Landlord is required, by law, to provide potable (drinkable) water for you. You can report to health department. They will notify the landlord to correct the problem. Landlord MUST do this, and landlord must pay the cost to do it. It is not to be at your expense.

You should be entitle to rent refund for time you did not have water. If necessary, Housing Authority can help with that.

What would the formula for arsenic trichloride be?

Posted by admin on May 31st, 2010 and filed under arsenic | 4 Comments »

Arsenic has a +3 charge, but trichloride would already have 3. So would it be AsCl3 or As(Cl3)3?

The formula is AsCl3. Arsenic has a +3 charge, chloride has a -1 charge.
When you write out the formula it becomes AsCl3–it is trichloride because of the +3 charge on As ion.

How can I safely handle arsenic dust?

Posted by admin on May 28th, 2010 and filed under arsenic | 2 Comments »

I need to renovate my kitchen and I know some years ago a minor termite infestation was treated with Arsenic dust. Is there a safe way for me to handle this (other than the obvious wear a mask and gloves etc). Is it safer for example to sweep it or vacuum it (or some other method)? Or should I just call a pest control co and pay the $200 call out?!

I tried this in maintenance and repairs and not one answer. I don’t believe there’s NO-ONE with a thought or two on this!
The amount was about ‘three squirts of a puffer’! (precise hey?). Only quite a small amount. The termites had only just gotten in but in the few weeks they ate out much of the sub frame supporting the kitchen cupboards. And yes I knew it could be absorbed – exactly what scares me!

I do not think the pest control company would clean up previous pesticide applications. However, you might ask them for advice about how to clean up.

If you use a vacuum cleaner inside the house, some of the dust is going to be stirred up and spread into the air. It might help if you used water in a spray bottle to wet the powder, then use a wet vac to suck up the water.

Arsenic in a ant trap. Does it matter how much is ingested before a pet might have problems or worse?

Posted by admin on May 26th, 2010 and filed under arsenic | 3 Comments »

The ant trap had 2% percent of arsenic in it. My dog is a golden retriever whose 3 months old and weighs 35 pounds. I’m not sure how much poison was in the ant trap and how much my pup managed to get into his body. Plus for how long he first came in contact with it before I could get him to the vet. I’m really distraught over this and don’t wanna lose him.

Here is some information on ant traps w/arsenic, and pet poisoning. It has some figures on how much is how toxic per lbs of weight of the dog.

If you’ve gotten him to the vet, its the best thing you could do. Good luck, I hope he’s ok.

Will washing clothing in a regular washer/dryer remove small amounts of arsenic from it?

Posted by admin on May 23rd, 2010 and filed under arsenic | 1 Comment »

Such as amounts you might acquire from sitting down on an arsenic contaminated deck or porch. Will simply running the clothing through a washer and dryer successfully remove all of the arsenic, or will that just distribute it to everything else in the washer? Should the clothing just be thrown out?

just wash them normally – many things have small amounts of arsenic dont stress about treated timbers ou probably need to chew on it to be affected

What are the physical properties of arsenic?

Posted by admin on May 19th, 2010 and filed under arsenic | 1 Comment »

I can’t find any website that will give me the physical properties of arsenic without them giving me a whole bunch of reactions and such.

It pains me to admit it but Wikipedia does a good job.
