How is arsenic released from sulfide minerals?
sulfide minerals as a byproduct of gold mining in waste dumps. how is the arsenic released to contaminate groundwater. is it because they are exposed to air?
does this
Brilliant. Thanks a million. Arsenate keeps cropping up in the books so now i know why. If i cant find the answer i may be asking how arsenate = arsenic
Arsenic can substitute for sulfur in a lot of metal-sulfides, and even forms its own sulfosalt minerals (metal-sulfide-arsenide minerals). Arsenic is often enriched in many types of gold ores; it is the nature of the chemistry that caused the deposit to form in the first place.
the arsenic-bearing minerals will react with water under earth surface conditions (water at low temperatures in the presence of oxygen), releasing sulfuric acid and arsenate to solution. the minerals are soluble in water. When you dig the ore out of the ground, it exposes them to air and water, and off you go.

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive hydrogen sulfide detector?
I’m hoping to get one for around $100 or less.
Of course, if it could detect other sewer gases that would be good too, but I’m most interested in the hydrogen sulfide because the smell is as reported and the sickness symptoms of breathing it are consistent with hydrogen sulfide poisoning.
Thanks in advance.
How about one of these?

What is a common example of magnesium sulfide?
I need to find a common, household form of magnesium sulfide for my Honors Chemistry class.
Magnesium sulfide (MgS) is not commonly found in households. It’s a reactive compound that reacts with water to form hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and magnesium oxide (MgO).
I suspect you mean magnesium SULFATE. If so, then you are looking for Epsom salts, which are a hydrated form of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4 * 7 H2O). Epsom salts are used as a laxative, and in water baths used to relieve minor aches and pains (e.g., in a foot soak, or in one’s bath water).
You’re going to have problems passing your honors class if you don’t distinguish between sulfides and sulfates!
GEOENGINEERING – STRATOSPHERIC HYDROGEN SULFIDE AEROSOLS
Example of proposed geoengineering techniques to limit the effect and impact of climate change due to rising levels of greenhouse gases include the production of stratospheric sulfur aerosols, which was suggested by Paul Crutzen.

Ammonium hydrogen sulfide dissociates into ammonia gas and hydrogen sulfide gas. If we start with a sample of?
Ammonium hydrogen sulfide dissociates into ammonia gas and hydrogen sulfide gas. If we start with a sample of pure NH4HS(s) at 25°C, the total pressure of the gases is 0.658 atm when equilibrium is established. Write an equation for the dissociation reaction and determine the value of Kp. (Type your answer using the format CO2 for CO2. Use the lowest possible coefficients.)
NH4HS(s) ==> NH3(g) + H2S(g)
Total pressure at equilibrium = 0.658 atm
Individual pressure of each gas = 0.329 atm
Kp = (0.329 atm)^2 = 0.108
Hydrogen Sulfide – H2S – Safety Training
Sample Clip.
Anyone working in the oilfield or petrochemical industry – even for a short time, is aware of the many potential hazards present on exploration, production and refining facilities. To work safely around hydrogen sulfide, everyone must be aware of its properties and characteristics. This program teaches the learner to recognize when Hydrogen Sulfide is present in the work area and take necessary precautions to work with Hydrogen Sulfide safely.
This training helps fulfill the training requirements of API Recommended Practice 49, ANSI Z390.1 and other regulatory standards.
The Advantage version of this course is highly interactive and provides an individualized learner experience. See the full course details at this address – http://www.masterytech.com/productpage.php?product_id=moxih2ss
