when copper wire is heated, too much amperage, it will burn through the rubber coating that is specifically made for it. so yeh you would have a fire on your hands. like some others have said copper is a conductor. heating elements are made of resistors. that's why they heat up. the resistance to current flow causes heat. you also need a thermostat to control the current flow. if not you'll just have a nice carbecue
References :
Copper wire is never used for heating elements, it conducts electricity too well. Most heating elements are made from nichrome wire. It would probably be more economical to see what sort of heater elements are available off the shelf than to try to fabricate your own.
References :
Heating elements aren't just standard copper wire. Not sure what they're made of but I think copper will just burn into.
References :
Same here. Use resistance type wire and use Kevlar as a liner.
References :
plain and simple

Check what your local regulations are, and do some web searches to see what the hazards are. I used to live in a community where arsenic in the water was a concern. It didn't used to be, because it's only fairly recently that testing could show such small amounts, but a whole development was held up because the water that had been considered potable when the development started was tested again with the new tests, and they had to re-do the water supply so they could keep building. That's the same water that other houses had been using for many years, with naturally-occurring arsenic in it.
References :
Slightly confused, but I think I got it. Copper wire only generates heat when you are running too much current through it. I would stay away from cotton, use vinyl or similiar. There are materials that will generate heat that dont require the current that copper will. Look into them.
References :
There is this product, called Goop OFF. I am a 35 year professional Painter. This product was originally intended to remove latex paint from anything, including carpet. I ruined a favorite shirt , painting in it one day. Just for the hell of it, I decided to rub the Goof Off into all of the stains and wash it. What do you have to lose? It was ruined anyway. It worked. Warning! This stuff has a very strong chemical smell, so do a double rinse cycle when you wash it and hang it up to dry.
